Mount Toubkal vs Everest Base Camp: Which Trek Should You Choose in 2026?
If you’re deciding between Mount Toubkal and Everest Base Camp, you’re not alone. These two treks are among the most iconic in the world, but they offer very different experiences.
As someone who’s guided both treks multiple times, I want to help you figure out which one is the better fit for you this year.
Let’s break it down in a way that actually helps you decide.
First, a quick overview
Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa, sitting at 4,167 metres. The trek typically takes four to five days and is based in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, with Marrakech as your gateway city.
Everest Base Camp, in contrast, is a much longer journey. It sits at 5,364 metres and usually takes 12 to 14 days, including acclimatisation. You’ll fly into Kathmandu, then into the small mountain airstrip at Lukla, before walking deep into the heart of the Himalayas.
Both are extraordinary. But one might suit your goals more than the other.
Consideration 1: Time Off and Budget
If you’re working full-time, juggling family life, or short on annual leave, time is probably a big factor.
Mount Toubkal fits easily into a week off work. With travel, the whole trip usually lasts five to six days. It’s also far more affordable, with most trips under £900, including accommodation, meals, guides and permits.
Everest Base Camp takes more time and comes with more logistical layers. With international travel and trekking, you’ll need at least two full weeks, ideally more. Costs start from around £2,000, excluding international flights and kit.
So if time or money is tight, Toubkal might be the better fit this year.
Consideration 2: Altitude and Acclimatisation
Toubkal is a high-altitude trek, but it tops out just over 4,000 metres. Most people acclimatise well with a slower ascent and good hydration. It gives you a taste of what altitude feels like without a prolonged exposure.
Everest Base Camp, however, is in a different league. You’re above 3,500 metres for most of the trek, sleeping high and walking higher every day. The risk of altitude sickness is greater and you’ll need to pace yourself carefully, with rest days built in to help your body adjust.
If you’ve never been to altitude before, Toubkal is an excellent introduction. If you’ve experienced altitude already and want to push further, Everest could be your next big step.
Consideration 3: Trekking Challenge
Let’s be honest. Neither of these treks is easy.
But they challenge you in different ways.
Toubkal is short and intense. The final summit day is steep, rocky and cold, with a big push to the top. It’s achievable for most people with a moderate fitness level and some hillwalking experience. You’ll feel the burn, but it’s over quickly.
Everest Base Camp is all about endurance. You’ll walk for 12 or more days, with long ascents and descents every day. The trail itself is not technical, but the sheer number of hours on your feet can take a toll. Mental stamina becomes just as important as physical preparation.
If you want a short, sharp challenge, go for Toubkal. If you’re ready to take on something bigger and longer, Everest Base Camp will deliver.
Consideration 4: Scenery and Culture
Both treks are stunning, but they look and feel very different.
Toubkal takes you through remote Berber villages, terraced fields, and rugged rock trails. The views are vast and barren, with sunrise from the summit offering a truly dramatic reward. It’s raw and powerful.
Everest Base Camp immerses you in the heart of the Himalayas. Snow-capped giants surround you for days, with the iconic Khumbu Icefall, suspension bridges, prayer flags, and yaks all part of the journey. You’ll pass through Sherpa communities, visit monasteries, and feel part of something legendary.
Toubkal is quieter and more accessible. Everest is grander and more immersive.
So, which one should you choose?
If you’re looking for your first high-altitude trek, Mount Toubkal is the ideal place to start. It’s shorter, cheaper, and gives you a proper mountain summit without needing weeks away from home.
If you’ve done a few treks already, have time to spare, and want to tick off a true bucket-list experience, Everest Base Camp will absolutely deliver.
Or, do both. We’ve had plenty of people start with Toubkal, get the bug, and then train for Everest the following year.
Wherever you start, make sure it suits you — your schedule, your budget, your body, and your sense of adventure.
