Step 1: Know Your Time Budget

This is the most practical and most overlooked part of choosing the right trek.

How many days can you take off?

Whether you’re working full-time, juggling family commitments, or saving annual leave, time matters more than you think. It affects:

  • Your altitude acclimatisation

  • Your level of challenge vs comfort

  • Your post-trip recovery time

If you only have one week off, don’t try to squeeze in Everest Base Camp or Kilimanjaro. You’ll feel rushed, risk altitude issues, and not enjoy it.

Instead, match the trip to your schedule, not the other way around.

If not, that’s totally fine. It just means you’ll enjoy something like Toubkal, Slovakia, or a UK training weekend far more than jumping into a 14-day high-altitude expedition.
